The John Bell Hood Historical Society presents
Legends are Born:
John Bell Hood and His Texans in 1862!

June 25-27, 2009
Yorktown, Williamsburg and Richmond, Virginia

Stonewall Jackson"Dashing on with unfaltering step in the face of those murderous discharges of canister and musketry General Hood and Colonel Law, at the heads of their respective brigades, rushed to the charge with a yell. Moving down a precipitous ravine, leaping ditch and stream, clambering up a difficult ascent, and exposed to an incessant and deadly fire from the intrenchments, these brave and determined men pressed forward, driving the enemy from his well-selected and fortified position. In this charge, in which upward of 1,000 men fell killed and wounded before the fire of the enemy and in which fourteen pieces of artillery and nearly a regiment were captured, the Fourth Texas, under the lead of General Hood, was the first to pierce these strongholds and seize the guns. Although swept from their defenses by this rapid and almost matchless display of daring and valor, the well-disciplined Federals continued in retreat to fight with stubborn resistance."

-- Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson

The John Bell Hood Historical Society will hold its 2009 Conference and Tour in the historic areas east of Richmond, Virginia on the June 25-27, 2009. The program will focus on the actions of Brigadier Gen. John Bell Hood and the immortal TexasBrigade in the first great campaign of the Civil War; the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, and General Robert E. Lee's first army command; the Seven Days Battles.

GainesThe highlight of the tour will be a commemoration ceremony at Gaines' MIll Battlefield at dusk on Saturday, June 27, the anniversary of one of the Seven Day's Battles, the bloody Battle of Gaines' Mill where Gen. Hood personally led the Texas Brigade on a victorious assault of heavily fortified Union lines. The spectacular victory saved Richmond and was the first of many of Robert E. Lee's victories as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.

The JBHHS will also be privileged to visit the privately owned Eltham's Landing battlefield, site of Gen. Hood and the Texas Brigade's first major combat which occurred during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign.

Conference attendees will also be treated to a brief visit to Colonial Williamsburg and tours of the Museum of the Confederacy, the Confederate White House and Richmond's historic Hollywood Cemetery, final resting place of Jefferson Davis and many other prominent Confederates.

Serving as guides for the 2009 Conference and Tour will be Robert E. L. Krick, Historian at the Richmond National Battlefield Park, and the JBHHS's own Dr. John Goddard, a native of the Eltham, Virginia area and expert on the May 7, 1862 Battle of Eltham's Landing. Thursday evening lectures will be presented by Dr. Goddard and Dr. Brandon Beck, Founder and Chairman Emeritus, McCormick Civil War Institute, Shenandoah University.

Conference headquarters will be the Hampton Inn, Mechanicsville Virginia. A block of rooms has been reserved for JBHHS attendees at a nightly rate of $129.00. (Due to a NASCAR event in Richmond that weekend rooms in the area are difficult to find and rates are higher.) Rooms at that rate will be held until May 24, 2009.
